Messi breaks Barcelona’s free-kick record
Lionel Messi broke another Barcelona record on Saturday, as his goal from a set-piece saw him become the most prolific free-kick scorer in the history of the club.
Messi has now surpassed Ronald Koeman’s tally of 26.
Barca had taken the lead against Athletic Bilbao through Paco Alcacer’s first La Liga goal for the Catalans, but the Argentine superstar stepped up to take a free-kick from the right of the penalty area.
Messi’s low shot was on target, but Gorka Iraizoz completely missed the flight of the ball and it crept under him, as Barcelona doubled their lead.
It was Messi’s 27th successful free-kick for the club.
The 29-year-old had matched Koeman’s record against Athletic in the Copa del Rey last month.
Barcelona won 3-0, with Aleix Vidal scoring the third. Luis Enrique’s men have now scored 100 goals in all competitions this season.
